Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level domain names remained active.
